Outside of school and the playground, kids finding a positive community is becoming rare. Wrestling allows for kids to build deeper bonds where they learn to collaborate with peers, communicate with coaches, and overcome daily obstacles that come with improvement and competition.
One of the strongest reasons I found out from wrestling and want to teach my children is personal accountability and humility. Wrestling is a huge conveyor of those life skills. Wrestling is a 1 on 1 sport so on the mat every decision one makes is ultimately theirs alone. Yes, beginners have coaches/instructors who are more involved to help them make the right decisions so that as they advance they understand what to do in a match. The hours put into training, making weight, and working and learning technique is up to the individual. So, you very quickly learn there is no one else to blame if and when something goes wrong. This teaches you to accept failure more readily than other sports and instead of dwelling on the mistakes you made, you learn to adjust, learn, and improve next time around. You learn to work through failure and disappointment. Every match puts your mental, emotional, and physical limits to the test. You cannot just call time-out for a breather, you are taught to push through what you thought were your limitations. You learn to surpass what you thought were your limitations and strengthen your mentality and physicality.
